Do not register until you have confirmed your child's username. The username is required during registration and cannot be changed easily after the fact. An incorrect username means your registration will be stuck and will need admin correction.

What is a Student Username?

Every child enrolled with Smart Brains Kenya has a unique username. It is made up of a school code (a short 2-letter abbreviation for their school) and your child's name, joined by a dash. It looks like this:

How the username is structured
School Code
Child's Name
=
os-justineharmon
Real examples
Office School os-justineharmon
Demo School ds-marywanjiku
Jawabu School js-coderisaac
How to find and confirm the username
1

Ask your child for their username

Your child's ICT or Coding teacher gave them a username when they enrolled. Ask your child what it is. If they've forgotten, they should check with their teacher at school.

2

Have your child test it on their student login page

Ask your child to visit smartbrainskenya.com, click Student Section, and try logging in with their username. If they can log in successfully, the username is correct and you are ready to register.

3

Write down the username exactly as it appears

Note it down carefully — all lowercase letters, no spaces, with a dash in the correct place. For example: os-justineharmon

⚠️
Do not guess the username. Only proceed to registration once you have confirmed it by logging in successfully.
💡 Once you have the confirmed username, you are ready to register.
Keep it somewhere you can copy from — you will need to type it into the registration form in the next step.
2
How to Register
Create your parent account — you need your child's username from Step 1
You should already have your child's confirmed username from Section 1. If not, go back and complete that step first before registering.
1

Go to the Smart Brains Kenya website

Open your browser and visit smartbrainskenya.com. At the top right, tap the "Parent Section" button (blue button in the navigation bar).

2

Go to Sign Up

You will land on the login page. Since you don't have an account yet, tap "Don't have an account? Sign up today!" at the bottom of the screen.

3

Fill in your details

Complete the registration form with the following:

First & Last Name — your name as the parent/guardian
Email Address
Your Role — choose Mom, Dad, or Guardian
WhatsApp Number — enter without the leading zero. E.g. if your number is 0712345678, enter 712345678. This will also be your login username.
Password — choose a password and confirm it
Child's Student Username — paste in the username you confirmed in Section 1 above (e.g. os-justineharmon)
4

Agree to Terms & tap "Create Account"

Check the box agreeing to receive WhatsApp updates and the Terms & Conditions, then tap "Create Account" to submit your registration.

ℹ️
After registering, your account will be pending approval by your child's school. You will receive an SMS on your WhatsApp number once you have been approved. See Section 3 for what to expect next.

Getting Approved
What happens after you register

Registration submitted

Your account is created and is now pending approval.

2

Follow up with your school

Contact your child's ICT teacher or Coding patron at school and let them know you have registered. They will approve your account from the school side.

3

You will receive an SMS confirmation

Once approved, you will receive an SMS on your registered WhatsApp number that reads:

"Hi [Name], your Smart Brains Kenya parent account has been approved! Login at application.smartbrainskenya.com..."
4

Your child can now access Home Projects

Once approved, your child can log in to their student dashboard, go to Home Projects, and request an access code. That code will be sent directly to your WhatsApp number.

⚠️
Did not receive the approval SMS? This usually means your phone number has promotional messages blocked. See Section 4 below to fix this.
4
Not Receiving SMS?
How to fix blocked promotional messages

If you registered but did not receive your approval SMS or your child's access code, your phone number may be on a promotional messages blacklist. This happens when a number has opted out of promotional SMS — usually by mistake or automatically by the carrier.

🚫
This affects Safaricom, Airtel, and Telkom numbers. The Smart Brains system cannot deliver any SMS to numbers that have blocked promotional messages.
How to re-enable promotional SMS:
Dial this code on your phone
*456*9*5*5#
Works on Safaricom numbers · Select "Allow All" when prompted
1

Open your phone dialler

Using the phone number you registered with, open your regular phone dialler (the one you use to make calls).

2

Dial *456*9*5*5# and press Call

A menu will appear on screen. Follow the prompts to allow all promotional messages.

3

Wait about 1 hour

After re-enabling, please wait approximately 1 hour for the changes to take effect across the network.

4

Ask your child to request the access code again

After the 1-hour wait, have your child log in to their student dashboard, go to Home Projects, and request a new access code. It should now arrive on your number.

If the issue persists after following these steps, contact your school's ICT/Coding patron or reach out to Smart Brains Kenya support directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common parent questions

The most common reason is an incorrect student username. The username must match exactly what your child was given by their school — including the school code prefix and the dash. Ask your child to test logging in to their student dashboard first, then use that exact username when registering.
Your number may have promotional messages blocked. Dial *456*9*5*5# on the phone number you registered with, follow the prompts to allow promotional messages, wait about 1 hour, and then ask your child to request the access code again.
Your login username is your WhatsApp phone number without the leading zero. For example, if your number is 0712345678, you log in using 712345678.
The username was provided by your child's ICT teacher or Smart Brains tutor when they enrolled. If your child doesn't remember it, ask them to check with their coding teacher at school. Have your child try logging in to the student section to confirm the username before you register.
An incorrect username needs to be corrected by a Smart Brains administrator. Contact your school's ICT/Coding patron and let them know. They will escalate the correction. To avoid this, always verify the username by testing it on the student login page first.
Approval is done by your school's ICT patron. It can happen within minutes or take up to a day depending on when they are available. You can speed this up by contacting the ICT teacher directly to let them know you've registered. Once approved, you'll receive an SMS immediately.
Access codes expire after 1 hour. Your child simply needs to go back to their Home Projects on the student dashboard and request a new code. A fresh code will be sent to your WhatsApp number.
Yes. You can only register one child during the initial sign-up process. After logging in, tap the "Add Child" button on the home screen to link additional children using their student usernames.
Submitting for tutor review sends your child's completed home project to their tutor for marking and grading. Once submitted, your child will not be able to make changes to the project until the tutor reviews it and sends feedback. You can optionally leave a message for the tutor when submitting.
On the project detail page, tap Feedback to open the message thread. Type your message in the box at the bottom and tap the send button to reply.
